SMT Dispensing Machine S-D5 by Southern Machinery
Non-contact jet dispensing, dual valve or dual lane, SMEMA line handoff: how to size and specify an S-D5 SMT dispensing machine before you quote.
Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026 · Southern Machinery

The S-D5 is a high-speed SMT dispensing machine from Southern Machinery: a non-contact jet dispensing head on a servo ball-screw gantry, rated 0 to 250,000 CPS and quoted at up to 1,000 mm/s. SMEMA in and out at a 900 ± 30 mm rail height lets it run as a station inside a PCB assembly line rather than as a bench tool. This page covers what a jet dispensing machine replaces, which specification rows to confirm, and how the station connects to your line.

What does a manual dispensing bench cost you?
Manual dispensing rarely fails on the first hundred boards; it fails at volume. A hand-held valve responds to how hard someone squeezes and how long they hold, so two operators give two glue weights and two reflow outcomes, and without volume monitoring there is no data until the boards fail.

How does the S-D5 dispense cycle run?
Five steps, repeated at up to 1,000 mm/s.
- Board transfer in — belt conveyor, edge-guided, to one or two programmable stop positions; direction switchable at build.
- Vision and height check — a CCD camera locates fiducials and a laser height sensor reads the surface, so the program compensates instead of assuming a flat board (field of view 11 × 10 mm).
- Non-contact jet dispense — the valve fires across a gap with no Z-axis lift, so the head keeps speed and the dot stays consistent.
- Handoff out — the board leaves on the same SMEMA interface, with optional 2D code scan and MES record.
Auto nozzle vacuum cleaning is standard; an auto wiping device and an external ultrasonic tank are options.
Jet dispensing machine or needle dispenser?
Both put a controlled volume of fluid on a board. The difference starts with whether the nozzle touches down.
Motion
A needle comes down, dispenses and lifts, so the Z axis travels for every dot — cycle time, and a moving target on a warped board. The S-D5 jet valve fires across a gap.
Maintenance
A needle has an orifice that clogs and a tip that wears; a jet valve has a much smaller wetted path, and the S-D5 adds auto nozzle vacuum cleaning as standard.
Fluid window
The S-D5 is rated from 0 to 250,000 CPS. At the thin end a needle drips; at the thick end it will not flow without pressure that also causes stringing.
A needle still wins on very large deposits, pastes needing a positive-displacement screw, and continuous beads.

What is standard, and what do you choose at order?
- Included as built: industrial PC with Windows 10; single-stage conveyor with one or two stop positions; material volume monitoring and low-volume alarm; laser height sensor; XYZ origin calibration; valve temperature regulators; air stabiliser; auto nozzle vacuum cleaning; external ultrasonic tank; programming by on-line teaching or CAD import.
- Chosen at order: dual-lane conveyor; dual-valve head for simultaneous or alternating dispensing; valve rotate and tilt; precision weight calibration; auto nozzle wiping; camera or handheld 2D code scanning; MES (Industry 4.0) software; IC body recognition; Active Correction Technology; bottom heating module.
Note that changes quotations: the dispensing valve itself is not part of the standard configuration. The dual-valve head carries a piezoelectric jet valve and a conductive silver paste valve side by side.

Where Southern Machinery's own S-D5 documents disagree
Four parameters are stated differently across our own documents, so both values are shown. Confirm against your order drawing and the shipping manual.
- Repeat positioning accuracy: specification sheet ±15 µm at 4σ, CPK ≥ 1.33; deck and product sheet ±10 µm (±0.01 mm), CPK > 1.33. Ask for the acceptance test for your configuration before you sign.
- Maximum board size: the sheet states L510 × W650 mm for a single lane; the deck states a support range of 350 × 550 × 40 mm.
- The number 1,000: in the sheet it is 1,000 mm/s, maximum speed; in the deck it is 1,000 dots per second, high speed. Different quantities.
- Machine weight: approximately 950 kg is printed in the S-D3 column and not stated for the S-D5, so treat it as unconfirmed until the final drawing.
How does an SMT dispensing machine fit into a PCB assembly line?
The S-D5 hands off rather than standing alone: SMEMA in and out, belt conveyor at standard rail height, switchable direction.
Two stop positions
One or two programmable stop positions on the single-stage conveyor support a two-pass operation without a second machine.
Dual lane as a capacity lever
Two narrower lanes run in one pass, useful where the bottleneck is board handling rather than dispense time. Dual valve and dual lane are separate options and can be specified independently.
Traceability hooks
Optional code scanning plus MES software attach the dispense record to a board serial number.
Upstream of the dispenser sits the printing stage — see the SMT solder paste printer range. For the rest of the line, browse the SMT machine range, the board handling systems and the wider peripheral equipment on www.smthelp.com. Source documents are public too: the S-D Series dispensing machine brochure, the S-D5 introduction deck and the dispensing machine 3D drawing.
What does an S-D5 dispensing station cost per board?
The payback calculator that ships with the S-D5 uses your numbers, not ours.
- Labour released per year = operators released × fully loaded monthly cost per operator × 12
- Machine capacity per month = boards per hour × production hours per day × production days per month
- Investment recovered (months) = machine investment ÷ monthly cash released by the station
Worked example (example only, depends on configuration, subject to final technical confirmation): releasing 1 operator at a fully loaded USD 1,200 per month gives 1 × 1,200 × 12 = USD 14,400 of labour released per year. A station at 300 boards per hour over 20 hours a day across 22 days gives 300 × 20 × 22 = 132,000 boards of monthly capacity; a manual bench at 90 boards per hour gives 59,400, about 2.2×. This is an arithmetic aid, not a performance guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Which fluids can the S-D5 dispensing machine run?
Conductive silver paste, washable flux paste, die bonding solder paste, laser solder paste, stainless steel solder paste and other special pastes, rated 0 to 250,000 CPS. Send your fluid datasheet and we confirm the valve and nozzle first.
Why is non-contact jetting better than a needle dispenser?
A needle touches down, so the Z axis travels for every dot and the result depends on the gap. A jet valve fires across a gap with no Z movement, which holds speed and dot consistency on uneven boards.
What board size can it actually handle?
The sheet states max L510 × W650 mm and min L50 × W50 mm for a single lane; the deck states 350 × 550 × 40 mm. They do not agree, so send your panels and we confirm both ends on a real fixture.
Does it fit an existing line, and can it talk to our MES?
Yes: SMEMA in and out, 900 ± 30 mm rail height, direction switchable at build. MES integration is an Industry 4.0 option with 2D code scanning; tell us your MES and board identifier and we scope it before quoting.
Tell us the board, and we will size the S-D5 dispensing machine
Send your panel size, fluid, dispense pattern and target rate, and you get a configuration and a price rather than a catalogue. Southern Machinery builds SMT and THT assembly equipment in Shenzhen, China, founded 2011, with free installation and training and 7×24 worldwide support.
